Top 3 DIY Things to do with Kids this Summer

“Mom …I am bored…” Isn’t that what you get to hear all day from your child during vacations? With temperature soaring, outdoor activities will be minimal & kids will be restricted to indoors making things only more difficult in coming months.

You can visit museum, circus, zoo, library, movies & malls with kids but then there are days when they are home all day in front of TV or playing on their computer. As moms we really get uncomfortable about the increased screen time when kids are indoors. We suggest some simple kids’ friendly DIY experiments & activities to keep the kids engaged & busy.

Science experiments are a great way of keeping kids engaged.

Make a beautiful volcano

What you need – vase, baking soda, vinegar, food, glitter & pan.

Method

1) Place 2-3 Tablespoons baking soda in the bottom of the vase.  Put the vase in the.

2) Add 6-7 drops of food colouring and 1-2 teaspoons of glitter.

3) Quickly pour in about 1/2 cup vinegar.  Watch for the sparkles!

4) When the action is over, repeat the experiment

Maple Bear has a great theme based camps where other than doing basic experiments, children also learn a lot about forensic science through experiments, plays, art & craft, and games. Children will love being detectives and solve mysteries through science experiments involving understanding and application of scientific concepts.

Paper mache globe

Did you miss making a globe on Earth’s day? It’s a great way learning about how to care for the Earth.

What you need

Scissors, Newspaper, 1 cup flour, 1 cup water, 1 balloon, inflated with a small piece of string tied to the end, Marker, Green and blue acrylic paint, and Foam paint brush

1) Spread out some extra newspaper on your work surface to catch the drips before you begin.

2) Cut your other recycled newspaper into strips and set aside.

3) In a large bowl, mix one cup of flour and one cup of water together to form your paper mache paste.

4) Dip strips of newspaper, one at a time, into your paper mache paste, then “squeegee” the majority of the paste from the newspaper by running the strip between your two fingers. Then apply the strips in layers to your inflated balloon. It may help to set your balloon on top of a bowl or pot to keep your paper mache globe from rolling away while you work! Repeat until you’ve covered the entire surface of the balloon. Finally, hang your paper mache globe outside to dry.

Once your globe craft has dried, draw the shapes of the continents, paint with green and blue paint and your kids will be ready to take over the world — or at least the paper mache globe version! It doesn’t matter if the globe is perfectly round or not — it will still be perfection to your kids.
