Mom? No Sleep? 5 tips to survive your day after a sleepless night

Moms and uninterrupted sleep don’t go hand in hand. It starts right from pregnancy when you find the last few months really tough to sleep. Then your little one arrives who wants to be held, fed or changed around the clock, making you feel like a zombie. By the time your kid gets older, things turn a little better. But there are those unannounced nights when the kid wakes up, is troubled with something or simply needs you, giving a toss to your sleep schedule and you wake up in vengeance.

Here are a few tips to help you survive the day after a sleepless night –

Don’t skip breakfast

Breakfast sends a powerful signal to your brain that it’s time to wake up.  If somebody is not a morning person, it doesn’t have to be a big breakfast, a shake or a smoothie will work just fine, as long as breakfast provides you with a good balance of protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. The better your nutrition on a sleep-deprived day, the more energy you’ll be able to salvage.

 Drink water

When you don’t get enough sleep, it is extremely important to hydrate early and frequently. This doesn’t necessarily mean chugging water from the time your alarm goes off until your day ends. There are a range of different foods you can include like -watermelon, lettuce, cucumbers, green peppers and baby carrots.

 Get some sunshine in

Another good way to send a powerful wake-up signal to that your sleep deprives brain of yours is by exposing yourself to natural sunlight. Go for a walk in the garden. You can even do yoga exercises in the sun.

 Limit coffee/ tea

Experts typically stick to an upper limit of about 400 mg of caffeine a day, or roughly 4 cups of coffee or tea. On your most sleep-deprived day, if you are not careful, you could hit that benchmark by 11 a.m. (hey, we’ve all been there). But too much of caffeine can leave you more restless.

Ask for help and give yourself a treat

You are not a robot. There are days when you will be the best mother and then there are days when you need to wind down. It’s all about balance. Let someone else take care of your responsibilities for few hours. You can go for a coffee with your bestie, to salon for pedicure or on a lunch date with your husband.

PS: Do what you can to catch some extra shut eye, but always remember that you will make it through the fog.
