It also determines whether their hair will be fine, medium, coarse, straight or curly. Every parent dream of having a good healthy hair for their kids. Healthy hair doesn’t just happen, it’s the result of proper care and maintenance. Establishing a good hair care routine early on will help your child to form healthy hair habits.

Below are the tips to maintain a healthy hair habits from an early age:

Shampooing

Shampooing your child’s hair and scalp is mandatory. Washing their hair once a week or once every two weeks is sufficient if their hair isn’t excessively dirty. It’s always better to use baby shampoo or a diluted version of your own shampoo on kids. Lather using both hands in a gentle kneading motion, working from forehead to nape. Don’t pile long hair up on top of your child’s head.

Conditioning

Like adults, conditioner is a must for kids hair. Apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your child’s hair. A little is all that’s needed. Conditioner should be rinsed out thoroughly.

Towel Dry

Softly compress excess moisture out with a towel – never rub. Rubbing can cause hair breakage and tangles. Do not comb the wet hair. Avoid using  a brush. Once hair is dry, gently comb through with a comb, starting at the tips and working up towards the roots.

Detangling

Detangling is the most difficult step in the hair regimen as  it often causes a little bit of discomfort to kids. Gently removing tangles from your child’s hair helps you retain length and helps you dodge those nasty single-strand knots.

Deep Conditioning

Always do deep conditioning twice a month. Try to make homemade deep conditioner and apply it to the hair after it has been washed and conditioned. Let it sit for about 30 mins – 1 hour and rinse. It helps kid’s hair to get proper nourishment.

Trimming

Do not confuse a trim with a hair cut. Trimming only removes about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of hair. Only trim the minimum amount needed to get rid of these damaged ends using shearing scissors or have a professional do it. Once in 2 month, help hair to grow healthy and get rid of damage.

Oiling

Oil helps seal in moisture. Apply a thin layer of oil to hair to help lock in the moisture. Common oils are coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and Jamaican black castor oil.Oiling can be done twice or thrice in a week, so that hair get proper moisture.

Proper diet

Pay attention to your toddler’s diet to make sure she eats nutritious meals and snacks. The B vitamin biotin is important for a healthy scalp and hair growth. Make sure your toddler eats foods such as eggs, whole wheat bread, cheese, raspberries and avocados for a diet rich in biotin.
