“Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning “. Children learn when they play, while playing, they learn how to learn. As parents, we just need to remember to let our child be child.
My child loves playing different types of games .As a parent; I encourage and support his interest. Games need not be always football, cricket or any board games. We can create our own simple do it yourself games with materials available at home. All we need to do are to identify our child’s interest and follow the child.
Objectives & Skills
- Games play a vital role in overall development of the child.
- It helps children in taking turns, builds self-confidence, teaches value of teamwork, develops patience, fair play, respect for each other and enhances concentration in the child.
- Improves fine motor, gross motor, sensory, social, cognitive skills and keeps the child fit & healthy.
We have played several DIY simple games; I would like to share two DIY games which were super hit with my child recently.
Game no 1: Diy Tumbling Pom poms
Here is a super duper game which aids in developing fine motor skills, concentration and hand eye coordination. We love playing tumbling monkey’s game and I used the same idea for tumbling poms poms.
Things needed:
Cutlery set /storage container with holes/Colander
Straws/Pipe cleaners
Pom Poms
How we played this game?
I had container with sideways holes which was brought when I was newly married. I have used it for various activities from the time my child was toddler to till date.Today, the same container was used for this game along straws and poms poms. You can replace straws with pipe cleaners too
I asked the child to insert straws from one hole to another hole .He had to continue doing the same from bottom to top. When it’s done, I placed few poms poms on top.
Now the child had to remove each straw carefully one by one without making the poms poms fall to the bottom.
You can increase the level of difficulty by asking the child to remove two straws at a time.
It was total fun and interesting to the child.
Game No 2: DIY Memory game
Here is our super quick simple DIY memory game with whatever available at home.
What you need:
Paper cups
Things that are available at home.
How we played:
I just kept randomly few things as clip, eraser, pom pom, grass, dinosaur, cellotape. The child had to tell name of each item.
Then I covered those items with paper cups .The child had to tell those items which he had seen in the same order without removing the paper cup.
I increased the level of difficulty by asking randomly instead of order. Similarly, I changed different things in the game but the procedure was same. My son enjoyed playing this game very much. We played it for long time.
