DIY Activities to teach your toddler important lessons about India

Awestruck by the capacity of a child to learn so much at such an young age Sai Sharvani started off the learning journey with her son very early.

During the Republic day week we picked up the theme India and did a few activities listed below :-

1. Activities to introduce colours   of the Indian flag:

  • Vathal or vadam in three colours beaded onto an incense stick in its stand – works on colour recognition, sorting, fine motor and practical life skill.
  • Matching colours with blocks – works on colour recognition, sorting and fine motor.
  • Untie the knots of the tricolour ribbons – works on finemotor and practical life skills.

2. Activity to introduce National bird – Peacock

  •  Blue colour playdough used to create a Peacock, and then feathers to be inserted to give a real feel – works on finemotor skills.

3. Activities to introduce Indian currency:

  • Fake currency matching helps recognise currency – works on finemotor and practical life skills.
  • Coin counting for older children – works on mathematics, finemotor and practical life skills

4. Introducing National fruit Mango –

  • Cut yellow playdough in the shape of Mango – works on finemotor and hand eye coordination.

5. Introducing Festival

  • Prepare Festival theme exploratory basket – includes items representing few festivals celebrated in India.Like a few examples given below, while doing the activity talk about each indian festival. Works on fine motor, practical life lessons, show and tell.
  • Diwali- cutouts of sweets, crackers and diyas.
  • Pongal – cardboard and paper sugarcane, box with kolam stencil.
  • Krishna Jayanthi – special savouries,  sweets, flute and image of Lord krishna.
  • Ramzan and Bakrid – Quran cutout, Mosque
